Details:

I am a Cultural Heritage Planner for the City of of Hamilton. Here I aid in the formulation of policy, protocol and standards for the management of archaeology, built heritage, and cultural heritage handscapes within the municipal context, most notably the draft Archaeology Management Plan and the Built Heritage Emergency Management Protocol for the City of Hamilton. In addition I manage individual files and applications, submit reports to committees and Council, develop in-house documentation on heritage matters, and respond to requests by Councillors, staff, other institutions and citizens, among other duties. I came to Hamilton after serving as a Heritage Planner for the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, at the Southwestern Ontario regional office in London.

Prior to this, I served as the GIS Specialist for the Anthropology Department at the Lakehead University.  Here, I built an interdepartmental (anthropology, geography, recreation, biology, forestry) GIS research lab with eight Silicon Graphics 330 workstations, a 1400 server, and assorted hardware (54" designjet, poster deskjet, scanner, 4'x5' digitizer, cd-burner, &c.). It was mainly an NT 4.0 client-server network, although one of the workstations ran Linux (mandrake 7.2) to access Easy/Pace remote sensing software on the campus CRAY . In addition, I taught several computer mapping and GIS workshops for staff and faculty at the introductory and advanced levels.  I also taught two courses in the fall: Anth 3118, or Scientific applications in archaeology, and Anthr 4111, Environmental and ecological theory in anthropology. Prior to this I served played much the same part for the Anthropology Department at University of Maryland College Park (UMCP), building and running a GIS lab, while teaching sessionally. My GIS software experience includes the ESRI suite of ArcView and Arc/Info, in addition to GeoMedia, MapInfo, Surfer, and an assortment of CAD packages.

From 1997 into 1999, I worked on contract through JAM Consulting with the Archaeology Unit at the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation (MCL) and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) on GIS and database management. Tasks included database design, porting data from legacy databases to GIS, forecasting and budgeting work, routing data pathways, and extensive data entry and editing in GIS and proprietary databases. In addition, I contributed a requested submission to MCL on the development of CRM standards for stages I through IV (background through excavation). Through this period I also served as a freelance management consultant with other CRM firms, formulating proposals, procuring contracts and facilitating inclusion in consortium bids, and was retained as a GIS specialist.

I am well versed in MS Office, Corel Suite and Draw, and other common graphics, spreadsheet, word-processing and database applications. As a computer technician I am proficient in LAN-management (NetWare, WFW, W95/8, NT, Klockner-Moeller PLC's), software and hardware installation, trouble-shooting and maintenance, and a broad range of data and signal cabling systems.

As an archaeologist I have excavated, managed, processed and photographed all manner of material culture for CRM and research. I have also collected and analyzed sediment cores for palynological and loss-on-ignition analyses. My work with 35mm and digital photography in the field and lab is extensive. In a supervisory capacity I have run crews in the field, lab and office in varied and sometimes trying conditions.
